On June 1, 2016, Jacob Metcalf and Kate Crawford published “Where are human subjects in Big Data research? The emerging ethics divide” in the Big Data & Society journal.

In this blog I will offer a simple summary of their paper, so that regardless of your data science understanding, you will understand the authors’ main points.

And although this research paper was written more than four years ago, arguably an eon in technology years, it is especially pertinent as big data continues to grow exponentially! …

One of the many cool things about being a data scientist is modeling! No, not that kind of modeling. I mean the kind that uses algorithms to predict outcomes. Although fashion modeling is also very cool.

As you probably already know, a classification model tries to draw conclusions from observed values. A few examples are will a person default on a loan or pay it back, or will someone who contracts Covid 19 die or survive. And there are countless other examples of how a classification model can help to predict or “classify” an outcome.

It’s been said that a picture paints a thousand words. If that’s the case then I can just post a picture here and call this roughly one thousand word blog complete! But that wouldn’t be any fun, would it? Maybe we should update the expression to “a picture paints a thousand points of data” and go from there. That would make more sense as this blog is about data science.

The point I am trying to make, perhaps poorly, is that pictures are extremely important and valuable in interpreting and communicating results about data. And just to be clear, by…

My name is Jeff and I am a Data Scientist! At least, that’s how our instructors at Flatiron School tell us to introduce ourselves. It’s supposed to help get us into the mindset of being a data scientist and gain the confidence that comes with that mindset. Honestly though, I don’t quite feel like I am there yet. So I am going go rephrase that to “My name is Jeff and I am a student of Data Science!” There, that’s better!

My journey into data science began almost a year ago in the fall of 2019. At that point I…
